Coaching for those in Leadership in Higher Education

Coaching for those in Leadership in Higher Education

Leading in Higher Education brings some similar but many different challenges to working in industry and in my opinion and being an Academic leader has some different challenges to leading in a professional support function.

I have coached extensively in the HE environment having worked for The University of Manchester as a coach and as the coach for Queen Mary’s Academic Leadership Programme. I also have worked successfully with people who have come to me directly from other Universities.

The culture in academia can bring opportunities and challenges for leaders. Being aware of this means I can adapt my coaching programmes to support you to take account of this and help balance conflicting points of view and targets you may be asked to deliver by the organisation.

As academic leaders there is also the unique challenge of achieving success in leadership work and continuing with your research or other appropriate allocated work. I see the leadership role all too often becoming all-consuming which can potentially affect your career. Together we can work on creating new behaviours and approaches to manage your workload and achieve a better balance whilst delivering on your targets and making the changes you wish to achieve in the leadership role.

PS leaders also have unique challenges trying to be a leader and enact change in a HE culture, some skills need to be honed, for example, persuasion and influence to get things done.  We can work on your leadership goals and challenges to help be successful in your current role and future career.

I also work with leaders on many other specific goals such as accountability which can be difficult to enact in some academic settings.

Toni, Deputy Vice-Principal for Education

“I had the absolute privilege of being coached by Sarah. I have been coached and mentored several times over my 30 year career in academia but Sarah was by far the most effective coach that I have had the pleasure to work with. Sarah astutely honed in on core challenges / opportunities for growth. And the challenges that Sarah diagnosed were VERY different to the areas that I would have prioritised and worked on without her. It’s not an overstatement to say that working with Sarah was transformative. Her excellent coaching has changed the way I approach my career completely and supported me to become a far better, more effective educational leader - and to enjoy that role more! Thank you Sarah.”
